Register of Solar Water Heaters and Postcode Zones
Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator, 11 August 2010
As required by the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Regulations 2001, the Register of solar water heaters contains information about each SWH model for which renewable energy certificates (RECs) may be created. The number of RECs a particular SWH model is entitled to create will depend on its installation date and geographic location identified through its postcode. More about the Register

How to determine how many RECs your SWH is entitled to
NOTE: If you are an owner of a SWH it's important to note that a majority of owners assign their RECs to an agent who will determine the number of RECs you are entitled to. Assignment is in exchange for a financial benefit such as a delayed cash payment or discount on your SWH. More information about Solar water heaters
- Find your postcode zone
- Download the appropriate Register of solar water heaters document from the list above.
- Locate the entry/entries for your particular SWH model.
- Check the installation date - if the installation date of your SWH model is within one of the eligible installation periods, proceed to the next step.
If not, your SWH is not eligible for any RECs at this time. - Match the postcode zone to your SWH model.
The number of RECs you are entitled is listed in the column underneath your postcode zone.
About the documents
As required by the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Regulations 2001, the Register of solar water heaters contains information about each SWH model for which RECs may be created. The number of RECs a particular SWH model is entitled to create will depend on its installation date and geographic location identified through its postcode. The Register contains the following details about each SWH model:
- Brand and Model name - the model names used in the Register are typically the manufacturing/engineering model names, which often differ from the commonly used marketing model name. If you are unable to find a particular model in the Register, it may be best to contact the manufacturer or retailer of the SWH to find out whether the model is listed in the Register and the exact model name used;
- Number of RECs that may be created in each zone - the Regulator has determined four installation zones in Australia based on climate and solar radiation levels. Each zone is defined by reference to the postcodes contained within it.
- Installation periods in which RECs may be created - RECs may only be created for a SWH if it is installed between, or on, the 'Eligible From' and 'Eligible To' dates listed for the particular model in the Register. The Register of solar water heaters has been divided into two lists based on tank size: those models with a capacity of up to and including 700L, which typically includes domestic models; and those models with a capacity of more than 700L, which typically includes commercial models.
